NEVERFLAT joins the conversation at EVS38 in Gothenburg
From 15 to 18 June 2025, Corneliu Barbu from Aarhus University represented the NEVERFLAT project at the 38th edition of the International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition (EVS38) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
EVS is a long-running global event focused on electric mobility. Each year, it brings together researchers, companies, policymakers, and EU projects working on the future of transport. The 2025 edition highlighted smart charging solutions, bidirectional energy flows between vehicles and the grid (V2X), and how digital tools and energy flexibility can support more stable, efficient transport systems.
Corneliu joined the V2X cluster booth, alongside projects such as EV4EU, SCALE, and DriVe2X. These projects are all part of a shared effort to make vehicle charging more intelligent, affordable, and grid-friendly. At the booth, Corneliu presented the goals of NEVERFLAT, which aims to design and demonstrate a low-cost, low-complexity, and low-energy bidirectional charging system for electric vehicles.
The project focuses on systems that support both energy intake and return—enabling energy to move not just from the grid to the car, but also from the car back to the grid, a key step for improving flexibility and resilience in local energy systems.
Participation in EVS38 supported two important project activities:
-
Work Package 1: System Architecture & Requirements – Collecting feedback from other experts in the field about system needs, use cases, and integration challenges.
-
Work Package 5: Deployment & Demonstration – Informing the setup of real-world pilots in five countries: Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands.
These pilots will test NEVERFLAT’s approach across different grid conditions, user habits, and EV types. Each site will help evaluate how the system performs in practice—looking at costs, energy efficiency, user experience, and interaction with grid services.
Attending EVS38 was also a chance to follow what others in the V2X field are building, compare methods, and explore future collaboration. For a project like NEVERFLAT—which targets a practical, scalable solution to bidirectional charging—this type of peer exchange is key to staying aligned with the latest research, technologies, and industry needs.
