Alba Iulia
Alba Iulia is a local authority situated in the heart of Transylvania, Romania, with a population of 74,000 inhabitants. The municipality is focused on the sustainable development of the city and on improving its attractiveness for tourists, investors, and citizens. Over the years, it has established itself as a model for sustainable urban growth by securing significant EU and other non-reimbursable funds, which have been invested in energy efficiency, cultural heritage conservation, housing, and smart city infrastructure.
More recently, Alba Iulia has become Romania’s first smart city, piloting digital solutions in urban management and participating in international programmes to enhance mobility, quality of life, and civic engagement through transparent governance and cross-sector collaboration.
Role in NEVERFLAT Project
Within the NEVERFLAT project, Alba Iulia will serve as one of the pilot sites, where the municipality will test a bi-directional EV charging station integrated with local renewable energy sources, such as solar panels installed at the Dorin Pavel Technical College. The pilot will assess system performance in a high-demand urban setting and explore integration with existing infrastructure and energy networks. The outcomes will provide key insights for the project’s scalability and relevance across similar urban environments.
